A wild night at XOXO
Welcome back fools!
My buddy Andrew Snow is a popular DJ here in good ol' Reno. He's known for spinning at Fritz' bar and grill near campus and Satellites on California street. Now he spins every Friday night at XOXO, a little known club on Wells and Vassar.
I'd been to XOXO a few times but I realized that not many people knew about this new happening club. It's only been open for a few months and I figured that by using 'Its your weekend' I could hopefully get more publicity for my dear friend Andrew's new spinning spot.
I dragged my boyfriend to come with me since he never had been there before and the club was already busy and loud with the rising conversations of the youth of Reno.
The scene is similar to that of Satellites; Emo/Indie hipster kids of Reno. Unique styles and great music make XOXO stand out from your basic club.
There were many different faces and types of interesting people who came out for a fun and relaxing Friday night after a long week of work. After asking folks if I could take their picture, an eager dude named Kyle with a big grin on his face bounced around me for a picture, but only if I gave him my number.
I told him I would but I had to think of a plan to get out of it, still I needed a picture. He agreed to do a handstand, nearly kicking my boyfriend in the face who was sitting on a bench nearby.
After the picture he asked if I would give him my number but instead I gave him a sinister laugh and screamed, "Sorry fool, this is the paparazzi!" Don't worry I'm not that mean, he knew I was joking and just laughed it off.
His buddy, a guy known as Michael, came up to me dressed in swim trunks and a lei. After snapping his picture he asked me if I knew who he was, I shook my head and he laughed.
"I'm the lead guitarist from LIVE ", he said striking a goofy grin. I thought for a minute and figured he was lying, but after I saw his hopeful face I figured I play along. After all, if he really was from the early 90s band LIVE and I didn't recognize him I would be insulting him. "Oh my God really?" I scream, "I thought you looked familiar." I knew the guy from LIVE was bald but why the hell would he be at XOXO?
After XOXO I rushed home to look up the members of LIVE. It turns out that he wasn't from LIVE and he did look a bit to young to be in that band but both he and Ed Kowalczyk from LIVE are bald so I guess that's as close as it was going to get. I am pretty gullible but it's amazing what people will come up with, especially after a few cocktails.
Andrew played tons of awesome music such as: The Gorillaz, Salt n Pepa, Gil Mantera's Party Dream, M.I.A, Lady Sovereign, and Daft Punk. Two cute kids leaped onto the dance floor as soon as Andrew played The Gorillaz'
'Dare'. Sarah Ricks and Jacob Carnahiem let me take a picture of them dancing, they were the first to start dancing which encouraged the rest of the club to join in.
When Andrew played Salt n Pepa's 'Push it', everybody got up to dance, including my boyfriend and myself. Great song choices by Andrew, you can never go wrong with classic Salt n Pepa.
I had a great time at XOXO and I encourage folks to go take a look. Andrew presents the biggest Indie Dance party in Reno on Friday nights and it's sure to please anybody who's in for a good time.
