Cleanup helps 'make a better Reno'

Bags of trash, old clothes, bicycles and beat up couches.

These were among some of the items gathered and brought to a parking lot just north of the Lawlor Events Center on Saturday as part of the Reno Clean & Green program.

University of Nevada, Reno students, local volunteers and city employees all took part in the program, designed to clean up neighborhoods and parks.

"This is our big spring cleanup," said Kitty Jung, a liaison for the old Northwest Neighborhood advisory board. "It's also a time for citizens to throw away garbage for free so it doesn't end up in the desert. It's a push for people to have a chance to clean up."

The advisory board's Ward 5 helped by donating $1,000 for breakfast, lunch, T-shirts and prizes. This went to 200 UNR students who helped clean up the neighborhood.

The neighborhoods were separated in two sections: Valley Road to Keystone Avenue and McCarran Boulevard to U.S. 395.

"We're very impressed by the outcome, especially with the young people," said Chris Good, the city's interim community relations director. "We've had a great turnout, and it's a chance for the students to meet their neighbors, clean their neighborhood and recycle stuff."

Cairn Lindloff is the coordinator of Greek life and a leadership adviser at UNR.

"Our goal is to serve our community," Lindloff said. "The students live in this area, and it's a good way to contribute to their neighborhoods."

Prizes, including $100 gift certificates, were given out in various categories, including the most amount of trash collected.

Courtney Law, 20, of Pi Beta Phi sorority and Olivia Cheung, 19, of Delta Delta Delta sorority were among the judges.

"We've had over 200 bags of garbage ... ," Law said. "That's not including the old mattresses, couches and other supplies we've received."

Many strange yet recyclable objects lay around the judges including old bikes, lawn flamingos, and lamp shades.

The most bizarre object and the potential winner for most obscure piece of trash was an enormous satellite dish that one group of students found lying on a street corner.

“The satellite is going to win first place,” said Cheung giggling at the oddity. “It’s completely random and so funny what we have found here today.”

Many residents participated as well. And local organizations were at the campus to collect some of the unwanted trash.

ComputerCorps is using old electronic equipment and recycling the items for those in need.

A volunteer group is making use of the building equipment and furniture. Tires Plus gathered tires to fix up and recycle while Kiwanis Club is refurnishing bicycles for needy children.

"We do this yearly (cleanup) together for our city, but anybody can do it at anytime of the year," Law said.

Michelle Anderson is a project leader for Reno Clean & Green. She encourages Reno locals to keep on cleaning throughout the year.

"If everyone does a bit to help and clean up our city, it just makes a better Reno," she said.

Has The Cure's Robert Smith lost his mind???

Maybe it was for the money, maybe it's the fame or maybe it's a strong case of apathy. Whatever it was, according to Entertainment Weekly The Cure front man Robert Smith will reportedly collaborate with Ashlee Simpson in her upcoming album.

Now if you haven't thrown up yet, continue reading. It seems that little miss Simpson will be releasing her third album with the help of Smith, rapper-producer Timbaland, soul singer/songwriter John Legend, pop-recording artist Kenna, and producer/musician Chad Hugo of The Neptunes.

Now on a side note it's quite fashionable these days to collaborate with Timbaland. This man has worked wonders with today’s pop sensations. Remember Nelly Furtado when she was like a bird? It was sort of contemporary folk- early morning VH1 style. Now she’s a promiscuous girl that’s got every club-hopping diva shaking their booty. Timbaland’s infectious dance beats have remolded Furtado, perfected Timberlake and may even resurrect Britney Spears for her ‘comeback’. It may not happen but Timbaland has vocalized his interest to Entertainment Weekly.com explaining that he wants to “take her away, go overseas, and work it out.”

It’s no wonder Simpson wants his help; she may need all she can. But wait? I thought Miss Ashlee was a punk princess? The dark child of the Simpson family who is die hard rocker decked with cute little skulls and hot pink and black gear? But with collaborations featuring Hugo, Legend, and Timbaland, could it be she wants her music to be blared in da clubs too?

It’s true; we should give Ashlee a break. She’s had it rough and tough these past years. The lip-syncing, the booing at the Orange Bowl, the plastic surgery accusations; it’s a tough life the path of fame. She’s just trying to burst out of her pouty lipped big sister’s shadow.

But Ashlee may be doing something to piss off music lovers everywhere-the collaboration with the legendary Robert Smith. The news is pretty hard to swallow, what will come out of this?

The Cure is the cornerstone for the 80s post-punk, new wave scene. Robert Smith and all his smeared lipstick glory has paved the way for bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction and My Chemical Romance.

With hits like ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘Just Like Heaven’, and ‘Close to Me’, The Cure gave birth to some of the most romanticized pieces of abstract rock art for pure radio bliss.

But now this? Just how much money is Joe Simpson spitting out at these artists? Maybe Smith just feels bad, or maybe he truly wants to help. But remember, I did say “reportedly” so let’s hope it’s just a dreadful, horrifying rumor.

If not, just remember dear readers: It doesn't matter if you can’t carry a tune or play an instrument, or if you lack any talent at all and just a total poser-if your daddy has money then reach for the stars.

Fraternity helps bring Easter cheer

Easter came a day early for several families and children in Reno on Saturday with the help of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The kids took part in an Easter egg hunt Saturday morning at Whitaker Park near Ralston Street and University Terrace.

Ryan Chaput of Reno and his sister-in-law, Nena Nguyen, gathered in the sandbox as her children Kimberly, 10, Nicholas, 8, and
Mia, 10 months, dug around searching for eggs.

"This is a great opportunity for the kids," Chaput said. "It's nice that the fraternity would have something like this for the kids."

Nguyen and her family came from California to visit family for Easter.

What are the best parts about the holiday?

"Lots of eggs and lots of candy!" replied Kimberly, her Easter basket overflowing with eggs.

The hunt began about 10 a.m. Earlier, fraternity members hid the eggs in various places.

The children gathered around park benches to color the eggs. Eggs in pastel shades of blue, green and yellow popped up all around. Using crayons, the kids scribbled their names on the eggs.

As the morning went on, more families appeared, prompting a second hunt.

Fraternity members held signs along the streets, announcing the festivities.

"We just stumbled across this, and I'm so glad we did," said Lynette Johnson of Reno, who spotted the signs while driving by.

She stopped for the egg hunt so that her two sons, Colton, 2 and Carson, 3, could take part. The boys were smiling as they prepared to paint eggs.

"We wanted the kids to be able to enjoy themselves this Easter so this is just perfect," Johnson said.

The fraternity also organized other activities as part of the event, including sack races across the park. Doughnuts, water and orange juice were provided. And the Food Bank of Northern Nevada organized a canned food drive on-site so that people could drop off items.

Memo Sanchez, 21, a nutrition major at UNR, organized the egg hunt as a SigEp member. "We wanted to do something different," Sanchez said.

Mitchell Spieth, 22, a fourth-year health ecology major, watched as children searched for colored eggs.

"We're trying to build a community consciousness about our Greek community," Spieth said. "It's going very well for being our first year."

English soul songstress breaks hearts, strives to mend her own

With the melancholy mystique and sassy soul of the jazz songstresses from the 1950s and '60s, a fresh face has emerged and smashed her pointy heel on the faces of the pop divas of today. Amy Winehouse has become a powerful sensation in Britain and is starting to make a mark stateside.

Her debut album 'Frank' hit stores in 2003, a jazz album with hip-hop influences that got her dubbed a modern Billie Holiday.

Her second album, "Black to Black," is an incredible juxtaposition of intimate and heartbreaking lyrics, boozy ballads and a classic orchestration of authentic Motown soul.

The 23-year old songbird from London is back with a fiery new Ronnie Spector-like look, with her big, black, Aquanetted beehive held perfectly still above her pretty little head. Her songs are fueled by her dipsomaniacal self-hatred, the fear of losing her man due to her infidelity, and her stubborn refusal to attend rehab.

"Me & Mr. Jones" is a tribute to doo wop, with a touch of vulgarity and humor, "What kind of f--kery are you/Side from Sammy you're my best black Jew," Sammy being Sammy Davis Jr. The pop sounds on "Tears Dry on Their Own" mimic a Supremes hit, but her sultry, smoking voice is reminiscent of Lauryn Hill or Sarah Vaughn. Title track "Back to Black" is an epic soul masterpiece of lost love featuring haunting vocals and the chiming of funeral bells; the album's best work.

Although it seems Winehouse may be on her way to self destruction, the ill-fated combination that damages her health may be the key ingredient to her musical genius. "Back to Black" is a brilliant, instant classic that pours out the heartache like "Dusty in Memphis."
