Led Zep to reunite!?!$@!>!

Light up your mysticism candles and throw an octopus in the tub, Led Zeppelin may be reuniting!!! The band is in talks for reuniting for a memorial show in London for the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Here is an article from NME on the legends rumored gig,

From NME:

Led Zeppelin are in talks to reunite for a memorial concert.

The band are apparently in discussions to reform for a one-off gig in London for their late record boss Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

It is thought singer Robert Plant guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will re-group alongside late drummer John Bonham's son Jason for the gig.

A source close to the band said: "Page, Plant and Jones spoke and agreed to do the memorial concert. They are waiting for a definite date.

"And no one can quite believe it, but during discussions about the concert they all gave the green light to a tour if it all does well and they don't all fall out."

The band have only performed a handful of concerts since they split in 1980, including Live Aid in 1985.

"It has been hoped for and denied for years," the source told World Entertainment News Network. "But this is the closest they have ever come to a reunion tour. The feeling is that this is going to happen next year."

The latest trend: 90s bands getting back together

What the heck has been going on lately? Have you been noticing a trend of bands getting back together, mostly of that delectable decade known as the 1990s?

We had the mind blowing reunion of Rage Against the Machine at Coachella which sent all of their Che Guevara thumping fans into a frantic mouth-foaming state of shock.

The Smashing Pumpkins have made their amazing return with a new album, Zeitgeist, presenting four versions with a different bonus song in each.

Weezer is back again as well, but I have to admit that last album really didn't do much for me (did they say they were done?). Don't get me wrong, the majority of my college years were spent packed in a teeny dorm room with twelve other people for Weezer sing-a-longs, but their new material will never replace the perfection of their earlier albums.

Did I mention that Squirrel Nut Zippers will release a new album? With everything going on right now is the world REALLY ready for the third coming of swing???

Also, I just read that the Spice Girls have reconciled for an 11 city tour and a greatest hits album.

"Girl power is back, we're going on the road, we're touring the world," Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton said according to a Reuters article about the group's recent announcement.

Good God, all these bands getting back together is like middle school all over again!!!

A recent note from my "soul brother" and fellow journalist David Castro reminded me that British rockers, The Verve, have reunited for a brand new album and are going on tour.

Since splitting in 1999, The Verve have been quiet, even though the droopy jowls of "Mad Richard" Ashcroft have continued to moan and howl through a number of solo albums.

Their 1997 mega hit, Bitter Sweet Symphony was celebrated with much critical acclaim as well as making number 382nd in Rolling Stones 500 greatest songs of all time.

It's difficult to forget Ashcroft's tumultuous stare as he recklessly treads down the streets ignoring the ruckus of the city singing, "But I'm a million different people from one day to the next, I can't change my mold."

Why are all these 90s bands getting back together? Is just a seasonal trend that will be in-and-out like parachute pants or is it just the result of being broke?

According to their newly launched website, the band is "Getting back together for the joy of the music."

Unfortunately the success of Bitter Sweet Symphony was bitter sweet in itself. After using the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording from The Rolling Stone's song "The Last Time", former Stones manager Allen Klein sought out royalties.

"We were told it was going to be a 50/50 split, and then they saw how well the record was doing," said Verve bassist Simon Jones in an interview. "They rung up and said we want 100 per cent or take it out of the shops, you don't have much choice."

Ashcroft responded by saying that Bitter Sweet Symphony had been the Stone's "biggest hit they've had since 'Brown Sugar' probably.'"

The Verve will play six shows in the UK this fall. Guitarist Simon Tong will be the only member of the band to not join the reunion.

Awesome Music Video Wednesday

After being in Las Vegas for the weekend for my "tios" 50th wedding anniversary, I came back to work forgetting it was Wednesday. I frantically flipped through music blogs and fumbled through my memory trying to track down the latest tunes I've been listening to.

No luck...until Stereogum posted a video from indie rocker's Yeah Yeah Yeah's Myspace show in Brooklyn, New York.

Thank you for that Stereogum. Not only are you making my job easier but you've made my Wednesday MUCH brighter.

Maybe this Wednesday music video thing is quicklybecoming "Lex's favorite bands" blog, but I promise I'll change it up next week.

This amazing video appears at first to be a simple fan made grainy recording but is soon revealed to be a dazzling and beautifully filmed genuine music video for their new single "Down Boy". The single is from their NEW EP, Is Is, out July 24th. I know, I spit up my Crystal Light upon hearing the sudden news as well.

Decked out in a sparkling body suit and rolling around in tinsel, lead singer Karen O is a gem on stage. She is a born performer and her haunting yet exhilarating screams will get you instantly hooked. With her signature scarlet red lipstick and cropped black mini bob, she electrifies the stage strutting her long arms and legs. It's no question why she's one of the hottest women in rock.

Their raunchy garage punk rock sound is a hypnotic and infectious breath of fresh air: raw guitar riffs by the brilliant and itty bitty Nick Zinner, in-your-face pounding drum beats by Brian Chase and the ultra sexed-up screeching by Miss O.

Their debut album, Fever to Kill, is a furious frenzy of wild punk rock howls followed by a more mature and intimate second album, Show Your Bones, to officially make the New York trio a household name.

Formed in 2000, the band started early on opening for The White Stripes and The Strokes but soon found themselves performing world wide sold out shows.

The video was shot at the Glasslands show in Brooklyn in May featuring lucky YYY fans who were asked to come dressed in black for the night-vision effect. Some fans weren't so lucky, read the post at Stereogum.

Skip work, Go Skating!!

Ok, so I can't skip work, shukies, but today June 21st is Go Skateboarding Day (GSB) founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC).

Go Skateboarding Day is a way for skateboarders to enjoy their passion without the heckling of Johnny Law.

An event will be held in downtown Reno today from noon until 10 p.m. featuring a skateboarding scavenger hunt, contests and the premiere of Element's second video "This is my Element" this evening at 8 p.m.

A skate competition with a mini ramp contest will be at 3.p.m. with prizes provided by the World Boardshop.

Events will be held near World Boardshop on First street, as well as Wingfield Park and Idlewild Park.

100.9 KRZQ will be broadcasting live from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

According to KRZQ, events will be occurring and most skate parks today in Reno.

From the IASC:

ABOUT GO SKATEBOARDING DAY

Go Skateboarding Day (GSD), held on June 21, is the official holiday of skateboarding. The holiday began June 21, 2004 as an excuse for skateboarders to skip their obligations, go skateboarding and have fun!

Founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC), Go Skateboarding Day gives passionate skateboarders who embody skateboarding, as well as those who are simply inspired by skateboarding, the opportunity to drop everything and get on a skateboard. GSD is a cooperative of decentralized events that take place around the globe. Skateboard retailers, manufacturers, skateparks, distributors, organizations and individuals of all colors, creeds, and attitudes hold skateboarding events to celebrate the holiday.

GSD originated as the day for skateboarders to have fun, to raise awareness about the issues we face, to show the world what skateboarding is really all about, to reclaim our culture and to define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be. In the three years since that first celebration, the holiday continues to grow, but the mission remains the same: Have fun, go skateboarding!

Awesome Music Video Wednesday

Today I decided to dedicate my Wednesday video to the British beauty Lily Allen.

Allen is fairly new in the music industry but has already made a huge name for herself as a adorable sensation who is changing the sound of pop.

I first heard Miss Allen last summer with her debut Alright, Still, a bouncy pop-ska album dedicated to getting revenge on an ex-lover, drunken fights on Friday nights, complaining about her pothead little brother, and pushing away club-hopping slime balls.

Allen is famous for more than just her pixie-like voice, bright gold jewelry and technicolor dresses.

She has turned up in the tabloids for saying that everyone who bought Paris Hilton's album should be "killed off", spitting on fellow Brit Lady Sovereign at the NME awards and has admitted to selling ecstasy as a teenager. She's also been known to be a public and violent drunk, inciting fights with other musicians and cancelling her U.S. tour. from exhaustion.

She also criticized model Kate Moss for her new lines of clothes exclaiming that, "Kate's clothes are just for skinny, perfect girls. I won't be buying any," Allen said after coming out with her own line of dresses with the New Line chain. "My dresses will suit anyone, whether they're tall or small, or fat or thin."

Allen has also expressed her animosity towards the tabloids in her blogs on her myspace. "I don't want to be a celebrity, I am a singer." she said.

She has recently admitted to having body image issues and suffering depression.

"I don't sleep and take drugs with famous people (i have a boyfriend Ive been with for nearly 3 years), I don't go to film premieres," she writes. "I don't go shopping in the paparazzi hotspots, so please leave me alone." (People)

Perhaps it's that the 22-year-old singer is not cut out for fame. We've seen what's happened to other famous young ladies.

I read once in Blender that she has done everything she's wanted to do musically with Alright, Still. That might have been a rumor but maybe it's for the best. Allen is refreshing with her delightful sound, real-life problems, and curvy figure. Maybe she's popped up in a couple tabloids but she hasn't worn out her face like Paris, Lindsay and Britney. It's kind of nice to see another girl pop up who's not one those Hollywood party girls.

I could talk about her all day-but enough chat, let's get to the song!!

Here is her single LDN, an acronym for London, a bouncy ska influenced pop hit about how she enjoys the dirty and rough streets of the "city life".

"When you look with your eyes everything seems nice, But if you look twice you can see its all lies." Ah, how I think of this song as I ride my bike home going through downtown on fourth street. Cheers!

Robot Chicken's Star Wars

Prepare to spit your morning coffee all over the computer screen and look like a manic to your co-workers while you laugh to yourself. Ok, well maybe that's just me but the genius minds over at Cartoon Network's Adult Swim have seriously outdone themselves. Seth Green and Matthew Senreich 's show Robot Chicken, a stop animation sketch show using dolls, action figures and claymation have joined forces with George Lucas to create their own parody of Star Wars sketches.
The show is hilarious in its self, but their Star Wars sketches will make any Star Wars fanatic's head explode. But even if you're not the biggest Star War nerd, the show will still crack you up with guest voices featuring Hulk Hogan, Conan O' Brian, Mark Hamill, Seth MacFarlane and George Lucas himself.
This is a must see folks, but make sure you have earphones on if you watch it at work because the language may be NSFW (not safe for work).

My personal favorite has to be Luke vs. The Emperor in a "yo mama" fight.

Ok So I had to get rid of the video because Adult Swim basically turned it off, if that makes any sense so here's the link-Enjoy

Chalk the walk

Brilliant and unique pastel colors splashed the City Plaza in downtown Reno on Saturday morning for Reno's first Chalk the Walk, featuring dozens of colorful murals celebrating the Wild West.

Erika Cole O'Malley, director of Reno Chalk the Walk, moved to Reno six months ago from her hometown of San Antonio, Texas, where they often hold mural festivals.

"Mural Festivals are everywhere in the country, so it was time Reno had one for the rodeo and Artown." O'Malley said. "The event was planned three months ago, which was not nearly enough time, but we did pretty well."

The Reno Chalk the Walk partnered with the Rodeo Community Spirit Committee.

"I couldn't do this without (Reno Rodeo Association Chairperson) Jari Sutton, who gave us half of our budget," O'Malley said. "The other half was given by Councilman David Aiazzi, who is also taking part with the Tour De Nez bicycle race."

The organization also supports Artown.

"It's a great way to show people they have a beautiful downtown."

O'Malley had been at the downtown plaza since 6 a.m. Friday, only leaving for sleep. To create the project, she set out calls for three professional artists for commission and local professional or amateur artists who also wanted to volunteer.

She invited local schools and local programs, like Big Brothers and Big Sisters, for volunteers to create the murals.

The theme was Wild West of Nevada.

The three professional artists were Ray Valdez, Larissa Sokolova and Genna Panzarella, who won the top award at the world's oldest street painting festival in Grazie, Italy. Her piece in Reno is of a young cowboy.

Valdez, a local artist and fine arts teacher at Coral Academy of Science Charter School, created a nature composition featuring an American Indian and a horse.

"I wanted to take a different perspective on what I know best," Valdez said. "I feel fortunate and honored to be part of this, and it's nice to see the city include art with the rodeo."

Valdez also works with Youth Artworks, an eight-year program that teaches art for young people. Many in the program also took part.

"The Youth Artworks program is solid, we always get a good group of kids." Valdez said.

Larissa Sokolova has been in Reno for eight years after leaving Russia. She received her master's degree in arts and architecture in her home country and has been creating art all her life.

Her mural was entitled, "A High Noon Duel between the Old West and the New West," depicting cowboys on horses of the Old West and the kayakers and bicyclists of today.

Her husband Greg Kusik, a Citifare bus driver who's been in Reno for 15 years, gave her the idea.

"He gave me the idea of the old and new West combination," Sokolova said. "So the piece is a family project."

Rossitza Todorova, a professional artist who volunteered for Chalk the Walk, was working on her piece featuring an action scene of a cowboy chasing a calf.

Originally from Bulgaria, Todorova is received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 2005.

"To me, the rodeo is so romanticized to represent America," Todorova said.

Chalk the Walk was partnered with other events of the day including the Wine Walk, the Reno Rodeo and rodeo parade.

"We wanted this day to have so many different events so people could be here all day doing something." O'Malley said.

Todorova plans to spend the rest of her weekend in downtown Reno.

"With Artown, the rodeo, and the Tour de Nez, this has created a great melting pot of the West."

Boutique, owners discover direction with new location

La Bussola translates from Italian to "the compass," an instrument that determines direction.

Meredith Tanzer and her partner, Dawn Lewis, have set their lives in a specific direction as owners of La Bussola, a Reno art boutique featuring crafts, jewelry, glassware, accessories and other objects that are handcrafted by local and national artists.

"Before I owned the store, I didn't know I would love doing this," Tanzer said. "I love my store; I could do this until the day I die."

La Bussola opened in 2003 on West First Street. But downtown rents are expensive, and earlier this year, the owners started looking for a bigger location on Virginia Street. The plan unexpectedly fell through, and La Bussola was left with nowhere to go.

"That place would have been the bee's knees," Tanzer said of the big store that was not to be.

A sudden stroke of luck crossed the couple's path when their friend, Jennifer Oxier, owner of the vivacious Salon 7, invited Tanzer and Lewis to set up shop inside the salon.

"It was the most generous act ever," said Tanzer. "The people here are wonderful. It's like working with a bunch of your friends."

Tanzer and Lewis moved La Bussola into the salon during Memorial Day weekend. They started renovating Sunday night, and by Tuesday morning, they opened.

"It was crazy," Tanzer laughs. "In true La Bussola spirit."

The couple took the interior from The G Spot, a pride store that recently went out of business, and started again using their signature flashy colors, girly pampering products, fabulous vintage purses and hand made pro LP record handbags.

La Bussola and Salon 7 have created an incredible juxtaposition bringing together two of Reno’s most colorful and culturally diverse shops in hopes to lively up the community with more culture.

Planned fundraisers

They've planned events for the summer that include bikini car wash fundraisers, a children's art gallery, and an Artown performance by writer and performer Hank Sosnowski, who will be living 24/7 in the shop to write, read poetry and entertain customers who visit.

The store raised more than $500 at its last car wash and gave the proceeds to four different Nevada charities, including the Nevada AIDS foundation, the Crisis Call Center, the SPCA of Northern Nevada and the Step Into Music program, which brings music to area schools.

"There are so many nonprofit agencies that have lost their funding," Tanzer said. "So, many of them are completely working on donor funds alone or from their own pockets. That for us is horrifying, so we love to help."

La Bussola also opened the Deuce Hair Salon and Boutique in the Sands Casino, in partnership with Salon 7.

"It's funky and Frank Sinatra-y," Tanzer said.

With her busy schedule and passion for entrepreneurship, Tanzer said she works to keep the success of their businesses and community involvement.

'Crazy' life

"The life of having a store is a crazy one," Tanzer said. "It would be really great for people to remember us and shop if they want us to survive."

They are still looking for a bigger space in a lively neighborhood for La Bussola.

"It's not a long-term stay, but we'll be here until we find the right area," Tanzer said. "We don't want to rush it, though, because it's better not to settle."

La Bussola also plans to expand into California and Hawaii in the future.

Earlier this year, they opened a nonprofit gallery, Heart Spot Gallery & Books, in partnership with Nevada Aids Foundation. Tanzer and Lewis also run 2by2creations, their home décor and gift business.

"Saying goodbye was the hardest thing," Tanzer said about the old location. "We spent a ton of time there because we loved being there. It breaks my heart that I'm not there at the old place, but I am so lucky to have my shop."

"The move allowed us to open our eyes to new possibilities that we wouldn't have tried for years. I believe that if you really want something, your life puts you in that direction," Tanzer said.

R.I.P Mr. Wizard

P

I'd just like to take the time an remember Don Herbert, also known as Mr. Wizard, who lost his battle with bone cancer yesterday.

Oh Mr. Wizard, how I used to be kind of scared of your bushy white eyebrows when I was kid, but soon learned to love the wacky and house hold projects I could make with baking soda and soda bottles.

Ok, so I was too little to really do any of the projects but I still remember watching Mr. Wizard's World on Nickelodeon in the late 80s to see what would explode next.

He will be greatly missed and forever be a big part of pop culture.
Without Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Beakman's World would never exist, but that's ok because Beakman's World kind of sucked.

Here is the last interview with Mr. Wizard himself, as well as a recipe for a super duper science project!!!

What was the best part about the show? Why the insane mind blowing opening credits!! Enjoy! Special thanks to youtube.com

Awesome Music Video Wednesday

There's something incredibly refreshing about a song that instantly catches your attention.

A song that automatically makes you smile. The drums, the baseline, the soft yet esoteric whispers released by male and female voices, a wild bongo section and the shake of maracas creates a recipe for how a good song should come together.

Swedish imports Peter Bjorn and John's single, 'Young Folks' from their 2006 album Writers Block have created that perfect sound which could easily be this year's indie summer anthem.

The band's singer Peter Morén's semi-nasally croon leads the songs and is back up by the smoky purr of Victoria Bergsman of Swedish band, The Concretes. The intertwining of the voices make the song deliciously satisfying. And who could forget that infectious whistling-the song's pivotal point?

The song is about a boy expressing his past that he really doesn't want to talk about to a girl and if it matters for them to be able to be together. The girl responds by letting him know she's been through turbulent times as well and that it's in the past so it doesn't matter because the importance of being together is now.

Peter Bjorn and John also played their summer hit at this year's Coahella along with Bergsman for one of the most talked about performances of event. They are beginning their U.S. mini tour this year.

Enough rambling-let's just enjoy the video for once, shall we? I know you will.

Here is Peter Bjorn and John's 'Young Folks'.

And as for the chap who says, "I like the drums...I like the baseline.." well, I like his hat.

Beyond the valley of the dolls...

There's always something to talk about in Hollywood-land....

Maybe I'm WAY too young to even give this as a reference, but the Baretta theme song has been in my head since this whole Paris Hilton jail thing began...
Thanks Sammy,

Have a good Weekend everyone...

Will the death of the n-word really kill off its popularity?

A funeral will be held this summer in Detroit but no one will be laid to rest. The funeral will not be in memory of any particular person, but for one of the most controversial and over used racial slurs in the U.S., the n-word.

This summer the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will be holding a symbolic funeral in hopes to end the use of the word that has been in much debate for many years.

The funeral follows months after the Don Imus 'nappy headed hoes' comment toward the Rutgers women's basketball team created furious media frenzy. Although Imus never used the n-word, his comments brought serious racial tension and questioning of the first amendment and freedom of speech.

NAACP National Youth & College Division Director Stefanie L. Brown addressed the need to cease the word in an article from The Washington Times, "As African-American people with a proud heritage and promising destiny, we have to respect ourselves and stop disrespecting each other," said Brown. "The time has come for us to stop using and responding to derogatory words."

After he was fired from MSNBC and his CBS radio show, Imus struggled to defend himself by claiming that hip-hop artists "defame and demean black women" and call them "worse names than I ever did."

The finger had now been turned to the world of hip-hop and Russell Simmons was first to speak for the best of both sides. A few weeks later, the hip-hop mogul called for the music industry to ban three words from the clean versions of rap songs: "b***h," "ho" and the n-word.

On Saturday, April 27, nearly 400 people attended a panel held at the University of Chicago to discuss the question, "Does Hip-Hop Hate Women?" The panel criticized Simmons for doing little in supporting his claim.

According to AP, Joan Morgan, an author on hip-hop and feminism and many others are saying that those three words are already bleeped out of clean versions of rap songs.

Maybe Simmons was trying to help out the situation and defend the hip-hop culture, but it's not enough to make a valid statement. Even if certain words on the radio are hidden with a loud beep or scrape of a record, the meaning behind it is still there.

In 2005, Kanye West's 2005 'Gold Digger' was the biggest hit of the year inciting sing-a-longs in clubs, weddings, bar mitzvah and just about everywhere else. Even grandmas were singing, "Now I ain’t sayin' she a gold digger, but she ain't messin' wit no broke niggaz."

Yeah it was a catchy song, but one of the ugliest words in the American language was in the center of it all.

As long as Grammy award winning, Time magazine sporting, Jesus-loving, Fendi-logo- shaved-into-his-head-for-big-bucks non-gansta type such as Kanye West uses the word in a non-threatening way than nobody gets hurt.

Blacks could say the n-word as much as they wanted and whites could practically say it, as long as they 'had a black friend' or changed the "er" to an "a".

Yes, it was all honky dory with the n-word in the media.... until Michael "Kramer" Richards galloped around the laugh factory like a monkey on crank viciously attacking some black men in the audience.

We probably will never see Richards again since the colossal avalanche of criticism and disgust has wiped away whatever was left of his career, but the outlandish remarks left questioning about who can say what, who has the right, what's funny, what's not blah blah blah and six months later here we are again.

What is the moral of the story? Who the hell knows...

It's not until a nervous, wrinkly old white dude says a racial slur to open the black communities' eyes to what's really going.

Black or White, nobody wins. We're all to blame and making the word 'our own' may never get anyone to stop the use.

-p.s. I wrote this blog a month ago and I'm a bit late posting it but the event hasn't happened yet so there. :)

Awesome music video Wednesday part 2

If hip-hop isn't your style than maybe a little Danzig will
tickle your switch.

The original member of The Fiend Club and a twisted sinister ghoul, Danzig is one of the pioneers of metal and the founder of one the most popular punk rock bands in history.

Danzig, known as the father of Horrorpunk, has a reputation for being smug; inciting fights and mayhem with fellow musicians or whoever is in his way. Call it a Napoleon complex, but this devilish 5"4 misfit's three decade music career has paved the way for such notable bands like AFI, My Chemical Romance and Metallica.

In 1977, a young Glenn Danzig founded The Misfits, a horror punk band inspired by 1950s horror films with influences of punk rock and rockabilly. Their gory songs include "Mommy, Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight?", "Night of the Living Dead"and "Die, Die My Darling". Since their debut, The Misfits' ghoulish lyrics and corpse painted faces have become an important part of pop culture and the music industry with a cult following of every age.

After he disbanded the original Misfits in 1983, Danzig began to work on new projects and in 1988 finally released the debut album with his new band, Danzig.

A mixture of doom metal with a heavy blues influence, Danzig's new sound was slower and even darker than his punk rock roots. His hair now long, his skulls traded in for Gothic crosses and his slender frame now a massive swollen chest covered in hair and blood.

His amazing vocal range has been compared to Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley, but Danzig's fierce howling is what makes him legendary. Below is Danzig's most famous song, "Mother", a favorite sing-a-long song in local bars-i.e.'The Breakaway'.

When I was 19, my friends and I worshiped The Misfits and Danzig-ah youth. Please enjoy the music video, at times a bit corny but it still manages to give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside, especially the chicken sacrificing scene.

Check out The Misfits albums with Danzig and post Danzig at Amazon.com
or buy Danzig at Amazon.com as well.
Go to Youtube.com and watch a variety of Danzig videos, but be careful if you're at work, your co-workers might stop talking to you.

Awesome music video Wednesday!

Due to the fact that a certain friendly apartment complex decided to slap me with a boot on my truck during yesterday's lunch hour, I was unable to post my weekly music video. So to those of you dedicated readers, I will be posting not one awesome music video but TWO awesome music videos!!!!

It took me a bit to figure out what music genre would be suitable for this week. In a recent comment by 2008 presidential hopeful Barack Obama about the 'quiet riot' brewing among blacks in the gulf coast against the Bush administration, Obama warned about the chances of a similar eruption to the one in Los Angeles in 1992.

Los Angles was a boiling pot ready to blow over in the year before the riots. Racial tension was thick, gang violence was worse than ever and the poverty level was growing more in the numbers. The call for action was powerfully expressed in the music of the time. Bands like Sublime, Rage Against the Machine, Rancid and Bad Religion produced songs about the riots but no genre expressed it more than hip-hop.

Years before the riots, West coast rappers N.W.A recorded their controversial second album Straight Outta Compton as a message to the problems blacks were facing in Compton, California and established the beginning of the Gansta rap era.

Labeled the World's most dangerous group, N.W.A's 1988 album featured songs about rebellion, rage and gang violence. Their unapologetic attitudes celebrated anarchy, provoked the authorities and brought on the the new "Golden Age" of hip-hop. They were seldom played on the radio or MTV due to their violent lyrics, but N.W.A represented the harsh conditions of Los Angeles.

Straight Outta Compton was one of the first albums to have the parental advisory label; their three opening songs "Straight Outta Compton", "F_ _k tha Police" and "Gangsta Gangsta" all reflected police brutality and the revolution in the city.

Below is the 1988 video for "Express Yourself", the call for free expression in which Dr. Dre criticizes other rappers of being too scared to use profanity, forgetting their orgin in the ghetto and writing songs for the sake of making the pop charts, much like the radio rap songs played today.

The video features many powerful images of Dr. Dre as the president with a black Jackie O in the 'black' house speaking to Gorbachev, black children behind bars, a sign that reads "no rapping", and a white police officer on a horse harassing a multicultural crowd and a similar image of the same officer as a slave owner harassing slaves. The song also samples Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's song with the same name.

NWA is Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, the late Eazy-E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella. And yes I believe that is Tone-Loc at the end of the video.

Check out another great song and video by Ice Cube "It Was A Good Day", pre-"Are We There Yet" stardom.

The birth of 'Sgt. Pepper' 40 years ago today

Remember the first time you heard Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? May it have been 40 years ago today or last week, The Beatles' 1967 influential album has remained one of the most popular and acclaimed albums becoming the soundtrack for the "summer of love".

On June 1st, 1967, The Beatles
stepped back into the music scene with the release of Sgt. Pepper after they grew tired of touring in late1966 and went into hiding to create their incredible masterpiece.

The four mop-tops that nearly took over the world four the first half of the 1960s had returned almost brand new like butterflies from a cocoon sporting shaggy facial hair, elaborate and colorful clothing and a fresh sound that would forever change the sound of popular music.

Released just in time for the dawn of the hippie era, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band featured 14 tracks of brilliant musicianship and poetry.

With the celebration of the album's 40th anniversary, Sir Paul McCartney has recently revealed the true inspiration for each of the songs. Here is an excerpt from a newKerala.com's article,

Macca reveals that he was the one who came up with the name that introduced the world to the concept album and the gatefold sleeve.

'At the time there were groups called Laughing Joe and his Medicine Band or Col Tucker's Medicinal Brew and Compound. I took the idea back to the guys and said, 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - I've got a little bit of a song cooking with this title,'' the Mirror quoted him, as saying.

The album, he revealed, was in tribute to a police officer called Sergeant Pepper when the group toured Canada in 1965.

The songs of the album also hold their own special meanings.

'With A Little Help From My Friends': The line 'I get high with a little help from my friends' was for may years thought to be a reference to marijuana, but in 1970 John Lennon revealed that it really was about the help friends give each other.

'It's really about a little help from my friends, it's a sincere message,' he said.

'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds': Everyone though that it was a reference to LSD. It was in fact inspired by Lennon's son Julian, who came returned from school one day with a painting he had done.

When Lennon asked him about the painting, Julian replied 'It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds'. Lucy O'Connell was one of his classmates.

'Getting Better': A simple change in weather is what inspired this song. Inspiration struck Macca when he was walking on London's Primrose Hill with close friend and journalist Hunter Davies. Remarking on the weather, Paul said to Hunter that it was 'getting better'.

'Fixing A Hole': Critics initially believed that the word 'fixing' was a reference to heroin, Macca said that it was about his favourite drug marijuana.

'She's Leaving Home': A story about who girl called Melanie Coe who ran away from home published in the Daily Mirror on February 27, 1967, is what inspired this track.
